Meet Mowbrey Gil team members, Mitchell and Jamie!

Everyone has an idea of who an accountant is and what they do for fun but believe it or not, “accountant life” isn’t all spreadsheets and golf clubs. As part of a new blog series, we’ll be highlighting the weird and wonderful passions that Mowbrey Gil staff have outside of the office. For the first round, the spotlight is on Mitchell and Jamie.

Mitchell

Mitchell spends most of his free time in the mountains climbing anything he can get his hands on. Rock climbing is an increasingly popular sport following its introduction to the 2021 Summer Olympics and the release of the “Free Solo” documentary in 2018. Despite the professional athletes, it’s also an incredibly beginner friendly hobby with climbing gyms popping up in every major city.

Alberta is a global destination for outdoor rock climbing with beautiful quartzite cliffs and towering limestone mountains throughout the Rocky Mountains. On many hikes around Canmore, Banff and Jasper, you’ll see people climbing on rock slabs, roofs and crack systems. In other spots, you might see two small dots hundreds of meters off the ground, scaling a blank wall. This is usually where you’ll find Mitchell, pulling on tiny holds, slowly working his way up a mountain and enjoying every minute of it.

Jamie

From August to April, you will likely find Jamie throwing rocks at a curling club. Jamie is a competitive curler and has been a part of the sport since she was eight years old. Curling has taken Jamie from New Brunswick to British Columbia, proudly representing her Alberta roots.

While curling originated in Scotland in the 16th century, 90% of today’s curling players live in Canada! Curling has been part of the Winter Olympics since 1924, with the recent addition of Mixed Doubles in 2018. And speaking of tournaments, Jamie has competed in two National Championships and was a finalist at the 2020 New Holland Canadian Junior Championship.
